New Delhi, May 20 (IANS). Meta Platforms on Wednesday announced the layoff of about 8,000 employees. This is because of the restructuring of the organization due to Artificial Intelligence (AI). This information was given in many reports.
Facebook’s parent company has started sending layoff notices in a phased manner, which is expected to affect about 10 percent of its employees globally and lead to changes in roles.
Reports claimed that an internal memo outlined plans to move about 7,000 employees into new AI-focused roles as part of Meta’s restructuring process.
In a memo sent to employees, Meta’s HR chief Janelle Gale said many teams are being reorganized based on AI-based principles to create simpler structures and smaller groups that can work faster with more responsibility.
“While working on the changes, many teams incorporated AI-based design principles into their new organizational structures,” Gale said.
According to the report, North American employees were also asked to work from home on the day the layoffs took effect, a process that Meta had also followed during previous layoff announcements.
This restructuring comes at a time when Meta is significantly increasing spending on AI infrastructure.
Additionally, the company estimates capital expenditures between $125 billion and $145 billion for 2026, primarily focused on AI data centers, custom chips, and model training.
CEO Mark Zuckerberg reportedly told employees that the purpose of the collected data is only to improve AI systems, not surveillance.
