New Delhi, 21 September (IANS). Union Fisheries Minister Rajiv Ranjan Singh has said that the government will hold an investor and exporter meeting in the Lakshadweep in November to promote tuna fish, maritime algae cultivation and investment in decorative fish.
In a meeting held in Kochi, the Union Minister described the development of the entire Tuna fish value chain and entrepreneurship programs in maritime algae and decorative fish. The purpose of this meeting was to strengthen the fisheries sector in the islands.
In addition, he referred to the establishment of certification and tradition systems to ensure environmentally sustainable exports.
The Union Minister emphasized the strategic status of Lakshadweep, which is about 20 percent of India’s special economic zone and provides access to huge deep marine resources, especially high -value tuna fish.
He also highlighted the island’s globally recognized environment-friendly poll-end-line and handline tuna fishing techniques.
The minister said that the increase in fishing would boost the economy of Lakshadweep, which will later contribute to the economic growth of the country and will be in line with the Prime Minister’s 2047 developed India vision.
He further stated that a joint work group has been proposed between the Government of India and the Lakshadweep administration to speed up the pending proposals.
Union Minister of State for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairy, George Kurien, said that fisheries after the IT sector is the second fastest growing area in India and hence it requires more policy attention to it.
He described the fisheries sector with the goals of self -reliant India, Vocal for Local and Swadeshi to strengthen India’s self -reliance.
He emphasized the need for more investment in modern infrastructure, cold chain systems and price -added processing to empower local fishermen.
Lakshadweep’s Administrator Praful Patel emphasized the need for training and awareness on vessel technology and fish processing along with a structured outreach scheme for departmental schemes to ensure comprehensive stakeholder participation.
