With the advent of Artificial Intelligence (AI), everyone is now looking towards its next phase: Superintelligence, or Superintelligent AI. Many companies including Meta are actively working in this direction. Now, the company that makes ChatGPT—OpenAI—has issued a warning about this development. The company says that the world is soon going to enter the era of superintelligent AI, where machines will leave behind even the smartest humans, and society is not yet ready for this change. OpenAI suggests that “superintelligence” may arrive sooner than expected, requiring immediate changes to economic systems, job markets, and governance structures.
What will change with the advent of superintelligent AI?
OpenAI believes that in the future, AI systems will no longer be limited to just being a tool to complete specific tasks. These systems will become so powerful that they can easily handle complex tasks—tasks that currently take humans weeks or months to complete. Company CEO Sam Altman believes that such a future is not far away. He has said that by the end of 2028, the world’s intellectual capacity will be contained in data centers instead of existing externally. According to Altman, such systems would fundamentally change the areas of leadership and research. They will be able to run companies more effectively than humans and conduct better research than even the world’s top scientists.
OpenAI stresses the need to start preparing now
In a very short time, AI tools have advanced tremendously. Now they can accomplish tasks in seconds—tasks that would take humans hours or days to accomplish. If this pace of progress continues, tools will soon emerge that will surpass humans in intellectual work in various fields. OpenAI acknowledges that while no one knows exactly how this change will unfold, it is important to start preparing now. The company argues that superintelligence could prove to be a huge achievement, just like the advent of electricity or industrial machines.
Superintelligent AI also presents these challenges
Although superintelligent AI is being praised as a major achievement, the challenges associated with it are by no means less. In its warning, OpenAI highlighted a number of challenges, including mass layoffs, concentration of wealth in the hands of a few companies, misuse of powerful AI systems, and failure to enforce existing regulations.
