New Delhi, April 19 (IANS). Central Electricity Authority (CEA) Chairperson Ghanshyam Prasad said India aims to achieve 100 GW of nuclear power capacity by 2047, which is currently 8.8 GW.
Speaking on the sidelines of an event in the national capital, Prasad said, “A detailed roadmap has already been prepared outlining the steps required to achieve the target of 100 GW, of which legislative reforms are an important part.”
“One of the major achievements – the enactment of the Peace Act – has already been completed,” he said.
However, he further said that there is still a lot of work to be done in formulating rules, procedures and guidelines to implement this framework.
He further said that to support nuclear energy capacity expansion, several aspects like fuel security, site selection and skilled human resource development need to be addressed.
He also indicated that there is scope for broader participation in this area in the coming years.
At present, nuclear power generation is dominated by a single company, but Prasad said that in future 10 to 12 companies may enter the sector, which will accelerate capacity addition.
On the operational side, he stressed the reliability and sustainability of nuclear energy as a reliable source of basic electricity that can run continuously for years.
He further said that nuclear energy remains one of the safest and stable forms of power generation when properly managed.
Additionally, Prasad described emerging technologies such as Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) as both an opportunity and a challenge, adding that these are still in the development stage globally but can play an important role in clean energy solutions.
