New Delhi, December 4 (IANS). India is rapidly moving towards a clean and sustainable marine future. Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal said the government is strongly implementing the ambitious green growth plan and is determined to achieve global leadership in green maritime potential.
During the launch of the country’s first fully electric green tug, Sonowal said that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, India is pursuing a development model focused on environment protection, energy transition and future-proof infrastructure.
He said, “The Prime Minister has consistently advocated environmental sensitivity, clean energy and innovation-led development. Today’s launch of the Green Tug is a historic step towards carrying forward this vision.”
The fully electric green tug is being built for Deendayal Port Authority (DPA), Kandla. The project is being developed under the Green Tug Transition Program of the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, which aims to accelerate decarbonization of the maritime sector in the country.
Sonowal said during the steel-cutting ceremony that the move reflects a commitment to building a “green, robust and self-reliant marine ecosystem”. He further said that in the Prime Minister’s vision of ‘Developed India’, the maritime sector has been considered an important pillar of national economic transformation.
According to the ministry, the new green tug will be equipped with 60 tonne bollard pull capacity, completely silent operation, zero carbon emissions and highest level of energy efficiency. The tug’s electric propulsion system, modern navigation features and low-maintenance design will not only reduce costs but also significantly reduce the carbon footprint.
Sonowal said that innovation is the basis of national progress and this green tug is a symbol of the same. This tug will set the benchmark for future fleet modernization in India’s major ports and will help in enhancing maritime efficiency along with environmental protection.
