New Delhi, November 14 (IANS). Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Science and Technology Dr Jitendra Singh on Friday said India has now become the world’s sixth largest patent filer with over 64,000 patents, of which more than 55 per cent are filed by Indian innovators.

Speaking at the annual tech fest Innotek 25 at the KIET Group of Institutions, the Union Minister said this significant increase in patents filed by innovators in India reflects the country’s rapidly maturing innovation ecosystem and its growing global competitiveness.

He highlighted the changing nature of India into a frontline scientific nation.

“The country has moved from 81st rank to 38th rank in the Global Innovation Index, which is a significant achievement achieved through consistency, historic achievements and the country’s increased focus on science and technology,” he said.

Giving information about achievements like Chandrayaan-3, the world’s first DNA vaccine developed in India, indigenous antibiotics and successful gene-therapy trials, he said that these achievements represent India’s growing scientific capability and global leadership.

Union Minister Singh said that events like Innotek 25 reflect a larger national ecosystem that gives priority to private partnerships, deep-tech entrepreneurship and cross sector innovation. He said that the expos and conclaves supported by the Department of Science and Technology (DST) are extremely important in bringing together industry leaders, researchers, venture capitalists and young entrepreneurs on one platform.

Dr. Jitendra Singh reiterated that India is going to take its next technological leap in the times to come with strong public-private partnerships.

“The strong innovation ecosystem built under PM Modi’s leadership is benefiting India’s youth. At the same time, entrepreneurship emerging from startups is outperforming traditional jobs and government schemes are empowering new innovators,” he wrote on social media platform X.
