New Delhi, July 17 (IANS). Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI) has launched the E-Commerce Council of India (ECCI) with an aim to provide a common platform to India’s rapidly growing digital commerce sector. This is the first of its kind national platform, which aims to strengthen the digital commerce ecosystem of the country by establishing better coordination between the government, industry, startups and other key stakeholders. Through this initiative, policy reforms, research and mutual cooperation will be promoted, so that India’s digital business can become more competitive at the global level.

Addressing the launch event of ECCI, renowned economist Dr. Lavish Bhandari said that the next growth journey of India’s e-commerce sector will depend not only on new technology and innovation, but on better collaboration between industry and government. He said that if the industry comes together and has a common opinion on important policy issues, the government will be able to make more effective policies. This will create a better environment for business and will benefit consumers, sellers and the entire economy.

According to IAMAI, India’s digital commerce is no longer limited to online shopping only. This includes many areas like e-commerce marketplaces, online services, mobility platforms, travel tech, logistics, supply chain, digital payments, direct-to-consumer (D2C) brands, exports, cross-border trade and Artificial Intelligence (AI) based commerce. This is the reason why now the need was felt for a platform for this entire ecosystem, where industry and government could work together on future policies.

Many leading digital companies of the country and the world have joined the E-Commerce Council of India, which includes companies like Amazon, Flipkart, Swiggy, Eternal, Indiamart, MakeMyTrip, ixigo, Uber, Rapido, ShipRocket, Transport Corporation of India Limited (TCIL), eBay, Meesho and Tata 1MG. Apart from this, startups, MSMEs, logistics companies, payment service providers, technology companies, exporters, educational institutions and industry experts will also be part of this platform.

E-Commerce Council of India will work on many important areas related to digital commerce of the country. These include service e-commerce, product e-commerce, cross-border digital trade, logistics and supply chain, mobility, market access for MSMEs, travel tech, consumer trust, digital payments, responsible digital business, artificial intelligence and promoting new technologies of the future.

IAMAI President Dr. Subho Ray said that digital commerce has today become the most important pillar of India’s digital economy. This has not only changed the way business is done, but has also completely changed the nature of providing products and services to consumers. He said that continued cooperation between the government and industry will be necessary for the rapid and sustainable growth of digital commerce in the times to come. With this in mind, ECCI has been established, which will become a major platform for policy making, research, better business standards and dialogue between industry and government.

As part of ECCI’s long-term plan, the Indian E-Commerce Summit (IECS) will be organized every year, bringing together government, industry, academia and global digital commerce experts to discuss the future of digital trade and e-commerce. Its objective is to move India towards global leadership in the field of digital commerce and digital trade.

Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI) was established in the year 2004. It is a non-profit industry organization with over 800 members, and includes Indian and multinational companies as well as many startups. This organization works for favorable policies for the digital industry, fair competition, promotion of startups, research, consumer protection and development of digital economy.
