New Delhi, December 20 (IANS). India’s AI talent base is expected to double in 2027. This information was given in the industry estimates.

The growing AI talent base in the country is also reflected in the increasing participation of Indians among global developers. India ranked second in GitHub AI projects in November 2024 and had a share of 19.9 percent in total AI projects.

According to Union Electronics and IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnav, “This underlines the depth of India’s AI developer ecosystem. It also validates the government’s focus on large-scale AI skill development, research and innovation under the IndiaAI Mission.”

India’s AI strategy is based on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of democratization of technology. It aims to address India-centric challenges and create opportunities and jobs in AI.

AI related jobs are spread across many sectors like IT, manufacturing, agriculture, healthcare, administration etc. With the increasing use of AI in these sectors, the demand for skilled professionals is also increasing.

The Indian government understands this and has aligned its AI initiatives in this direction. This is also reflected in global assessments of India’s AI workforce.

According to the ‘Stanford AI Index Report 2025’, India is the world leader in AI talent acquisition, with an annual recruitment rate of about 33 per cent and ranks among the top countries globally in AI skill diffusion.

The concentration of AI talent in the country has increased more than three times since 2016. India ranks among the top three countries in Stanford University’s Global AI Vibrancy tool, reflecting its growing strength in AI talent and infrastructure.

Various initiatives of the government support the development of AI talents, such as ‘IndiaAI FutureSkills’, which is one of the key pillars of the IndiaAI Mission and whose main objective is to develop AI talents and research.

The government is providing support to 500 PhD researchers, 5,000 postgraduate students and 8,000 undergraduate students for AI-related work.

IndiaAI Data and AI Labs have been set up in Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities through NIELIT, where courses in AI, data compilation, annotation, data cleaning and applied data science are conducted.

Additionally, according to the minister, 174 IT institutes and polytechnic institutes from 27 states/UTs have been approved to set up additional IndiaAI data and AI labs.
