Geneva, July 5 (IANS). India’s Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh reached Geneva, Switzerland on Sunday. He was welcomed at Geneva Airport by India’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Arindam Bagchi. Here he will participate in the United Nations’ first ‘Global Dialogue on AI Governance’.
India’s UN Geneva Mission wrote on social media platform ‘X’ that Honorable MOS Foreign Affairs and Minister of Environment, Forest and Climate Change Kirti Vardhan Singh has arrived in Geneva today. India is keen to be a part of this global AI governance discussion that puts humans at the centre.
Kirti Vardhan Singh will lead the Indian delegation. This first UN ‘Global Dialogue on AI Governance’ will be held in Geneva on 6 and 7 July.
According to a statement issued by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), this Global Dialogue on AI Governance is a universal and multi-stakeholder United Nations platform, created under the United Nations General Assembly Resolution 79/325. It comes into existence after the ‘Global Digital Compact’ and ‘Pact of the Future’ adopted in September 2024.
According to the Ministry, this dialogue provides an opportunity to advance the international governance of Artificial Intelligence at the international level, by connecting cross-country, regional and multi-stakeholder efforts.
Along with this, an ‘Independent International Scientific Panel on AI (IISPA)’ is also working, which works on strengthening scientific understanding, transparency, accountability and human oversight of AI. This panel will especially help in increasing the capacity of developing countries so that AI can be used towards sustainable development.
In accordance with the rules and framework adopted under all these processes, the Co-Chairs also conducted several stakeholder consultations. These included an in-person meeting, which took place during the ‘A-I Impact Summit’ held in New Delhi in February 2026.
This global dialogue will also present IISPA’s first annual report, which will include a scientific assessment of AI’s capabilities, new opportunities and potential risks.
The Global Dialogue on AI in Geneva will receive the annual report of the Independent International Scientific Panel on AI (IISPA), which provides the first independent scientific assessment of AI’s capabilities, emerging opportunities and risks. The conversation will cover four key topics: social and economic impacts of AI, addressing AI inequities, safe and trustworthy AI, and human rights in the context of AI.
President of the United Nations General Assembly Annalena Baerbock has appointed Representative Agriselda Lopez of El Salvador and Representative Ren Tamsaar of Estonia as co-chairs of the 2026 AI Dialogue. The second session of this Global Dialogue will be held in New York in May 2027.
