New Delhi, February 3 (IANS). More than 26 lakh families in the country have benefited from the PM Surya Ghar Free Electricity Scheme (PMSG:MBY), which was launched in February 2024. This information was given by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy on Tuesday.
A statement issued by the ministry said that since the launch of the scheme in February 2024, a total of 20,85,514 Roof Top System (RTS) systems have been installed across the country benefiting 26,14,446 families and Rs 14,771.82 crore has been disbursed as Central Financial Assistance (CFA) till December 2025.
The state of Gujarat has benefited the most in this, where 7,41,819 families have benefited from this scheme. Maharashtra was second with 6,34,782 families and Uttar Pradesh was third with 3,29,847 families.
Under the scheme, consumers are eligible for a subsidy of up to Rs 85,800, making rooftop solar installation financially beneficial, especially for middle and low income group families.
Energy experts say that even a 1 kilowatt solar plant can generate an average of about 100 units of electricity every month, which is enough to meet the monthly electricity requirement of a typical house.
The Ministry said that under PMSG:MBY, it is estimated that installation of RTS in 1 crore households can generate 1,000 billion units of renewable electricity resulting in emission reduction of 720 million tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) equivalent over the lifetime of the RTS system of 25 years.
PM Surya Ghar: Free Electricity Scheme is a demand driven scheme under which all residential consumers in the country who have grid connected electricity connection from a local DISCOM can avail the benefits of the scheme for installation of rooftop solar (RTS) system by applying on the national portal of the scheme.
