New Delhi, January 27 (IANS). Due to the strike of bank employees across the country, the functioning of public sector banks may be affected on Tuesday. Bank employees are demanding five days working. However, private banks will not be affected by this strike.

Many government banks have already informed the stock exchange that banking services may be affected due to the strike.

United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU) has called for this nationwide strike. This organization is a joint platform of nine bank unions, representing officers and employees of public sector banks. This decision was taken after no solution was found in the meeting held with the Chief Labor Commissioner on January 23.

This includes big government banks like State Bank of India (SBI), Punjab National Bank (PNB) and Bank of Baroda.

Cash deposits and withdrawals, check clearance and daily banking operations may be affected due to the strike. However, private banks like HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank and Axis Bank will function normally as their employees are not involved in the strike.

Digital banking services, such as UPI payments and internet banking, are expected to operate normally. However, availability of cash at ATMs may be slightly affected in some areas.

SBI has said in an official information that arrangements have been made to maintain normal functioning, but due to participation of employees, work may be affected.

SBI’s statement said that while efforts have been made to maintain smooth functioning of branches and offices on the day of the strike, some services may still be affected.

The main demand of the bank unions is that every Saturday should be declared a holiday. This proposal was included in the 12th bilateral agreement in March 2024, but its official notification has not been issued yet by the government.
