New Delhi, May 7 (IANS). NITI Aayog has released a policy report, which presents a comprehensive analysis of India’s school education system over the past decade. The report studies key aspects such as access and enrolment, infrastructure, equity and inclusion, and learning outcomes. This announcement was made on Thursday.

NITI Aayog CEO Nidhi Chhibber released the report titled ‘School Education System in India: Temporal Analysis and Policy Roadmap for Quality Enhancement’.

The report provides a detailed policy roadmap with a total of 13 broad recommendations.

These 8 systemic recommendations include reforming school structure through joint schools and evidence-based rational systems, strengthening school infrastructure, administrative reforms and capacity building, setting up state and district level task forces for school quality, empowering school management committees, promoting teacher recruitment and professional development, expanding digital and broadcast-based education, and promoting equity and inclusion.

According to a statement by NITI Aayog, the 5 educational recommendations include changes in teaching methodology, assessment and basic education, emphasis on holistic education and student well-being, reimagining of vocational education and skill development, strengthening early childhood care and education, and incorporating artificial intelligence (AI) for innovation in teaching.

The report uses secondary data from UDISE+ 2024-25, Parakh National Survey 2024, NAS 2017 and 2021, and AASAR 2024. Additionally, suggestions were also taken from the National Workshop on ‘Quality School Education’ organized by NITI Aayog in February 2025, in which more than 150 participants participated.

India’s school education system currently covers 14.71 lakh schools and more than 24.69 crore students, making it the largest education system in the world.

The report presents a detailed analysis of access, infrastructure, equity, inclusion, digital integration and learning outcomes across all 36 states and union territories in the country.

Through heat maps and other visual graphics, the report shows that there has been significant improvement in facilities such as electricity, functional toilets and inclusive infrastructure in schools. Additionally, with increased access to computers, internet connectivity and smart classrooms, the digital education system has also expanded rapidly.

The study also shows that there has been a positive increase in the participation of girls and enrollment of Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe students at various educational levels, the statement said.

The report also provides 33 implementation pathways to implement the recommendations. These are divided into short-term, medium-term and long-term phases, with responsible agencies clearly identified at the Centre, State and local levels.
