New Delhi, May 1 (IANS). The number of Unified Payment Interface (UPI) transactions increased 25 percent year-on-year to 22.35 billion in April. At the same time, their value has increased by 21 percent on annual basis to Rs 29.03 lakh crore. This information was given by National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) on Friday.
On a daily basis, the average number of UPI transactions has increased to 74.5 crore in April, which was 73 crore in March.
The average daily UPI transaction value has increased to Rs 96,766 crore, from Rs 95,243 crore in March.
The number of monthly transactions on IMPS stood at 36.2 crore in April, with transactions worth Rs 7.01 lakh crore, showing a growth of 13 per cent over the same period last year. The number of daily average transactions stood at 12 million, showing strong growth.
In March, UPI recorded the highest monthly transactions of 22.64 billion since its launch in 2016.
UPI is now available in more than eight countries including UAE, Singapore, Bhutan, Nepal, Sri Lanka, France, Mauritius and Qatar, making India a global leader in digital payments. The growing international reach of UPI is increasing remittances, promoting financial inclusion and strengthening India’s position in the global fintech landscape.
According to the Finance Ministry, India’s leading digital payments platform has recorded an extraordinary growth of nearly 12,000 times in transaction volumes in the last decade.
UPI, launched on April 11, 2016 by NPCI under the regulatory oversight of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), has become the backbone of India’s digital payments ecosystem.
Starting from a modest base of just 2 crore transactions in FY 2016-17, the platform processed more than 24,162 crore transactions in FY 2025-26, the ministry said.
UPI’s growth in value has been equally strong. The value of transactions increased from Rs 0.07 lakh crore in the first year of operations to approximately Rs 314 lakh crore in FY 2025-26, representing an increase of more than 4,000 times.
