New Delhi, October 19 (IANS). Now the doors of the Supreme Court have been approached regarding the misuse of Artificial Intelligence (AI) which is increasing rapidly in the country. A Public Interest Litigation (PIL) has been filed demanding the court to direct the Central Government to prepare a comprehensive regulatory and licensing framework for AI technology.

The petition states that uncontrolled use of Artificial Intelligence is seriously violating the privacy, dignity and fundamental rights of citizens. The misuse of deepfake technology has increased rapidly in recent months, targeting not only ordinary citizens but also celebrities, journalists and public figures.

According to the petition, people’s voice, face and behavior are being copied using AI-based systems without any control or accountability, which is called ‘deepfake’. This is not only tarnishing the image of people, but problems like cyber crime, blackmailing and fake news are also increasing.

The petition has also appealed to the Supreme Court to direct the Central Government to create a national AI regulatory body to determine the accountability of platforms related to AI technology. This organization should monitor deepfakes and other harmful AI content and take strict steps against them.

The petitioners said that many cases related to AI and deepfakes are already pending in various High Courts of the country. The Supreme Court has been requested to transfer all these cases to itself, so that uniform guidelines can be decided on this subject.

The petition states that this petition has been filed under Article 32 of the Indian Constitution, demanding the Supreme Court to issue a ‘mandamus’ to compel the Central Government to immediately enact concrete laws to control the misuse of AI.

The penetration of AI technology in India has increased rapidly in recent years. In the last few months, a large number of videos, photos and audios have surfaced on social media which are completely AI generated deepfakes.
