New Delhi, June 4 (IANS). India and the US have made further progress in talks for a proposed bilateral trade agreement, India’s Commerce and Industry Ministry said on Thursday. Officials of both the countries held in-depth talks on several trade-related issues in New Delhi this week.
A delegation from the Office of the US Trade Representative (USTR), led by the Chief Negotiator, visited India from June 1 to June 4 to take forward negotiations on the India-US trade agreement.
Trade in goods, non-tariff measures, customs and trade facilitation, economic security coordination and other important issues of mutual interest were specifically discussed in the talks.
This new round of talks follows the joint statement issued by India and the US on February 7, 2026, in which both sides agreed on the framework of an interim agreement, aimed at ensuring mutual and beneficial trade.
In this framework, the promise of both the countries to continue negotiations towards a major India-US bilateral trade agreement was also reiterated.
According to an official statement, the talks held during the visit of the USTR delegation were constructive and positive, reflecting the spirit of cooperation and practical thinking between the two sides. The officials reviewed developments on several dialogue avenues and explored ways to deepen economic engagement.
Both countries reiterated their commitment to conclude mutually beneficial agreements that will strengthen bilateral trade and investment relations as well as promote greater economic cooperation.
The talks are part of efforts by New Delhi and Washington to enhance commercial ties and address trade concerns through a structural framework amid growing strategic and economic cooperation between the world’s largest and fifth largest economies.
The ministry further said, “The talks reflected a spirit of cooperation and practicality, with both sides reiterating their commitment to conclude a mutually beneficial agreement that will strengthen bilateral trade and economic relations.”
