New Delhi, May 21 (IANS). Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnav on Thursday said Indian Railways is making extensive use of modern technologies like AI, drones and CCTV to enhance the security of trains, passengers, station premises and the vast rail network.

During the high-level security review meeting held in the national capital, he said that this work is being done in mission mode by strengthening the system of intelligence gathering at the beat level of the Railway Protection Force (RPF).

The Railway Ministry held detailed discussions with field officers across the country in the presence of senior officials in the national capital.

The main focus of the meeting was to strengthen coordination by improving information sharing arrangements between RPF and Government Railway Police for more effective security management in the railway network.

It was told in the meeting that in the last few days, preliminary investigation into many incidents has revealed the involvement of anti-social elements. These also include some recent incidents of arson.

Indian Railways has taken these incidents seriously and the RPF is actively investigating them.

According to the official statement, in many cases, prompt and proactive action by the Railways has helped in averting major accidents.

The meeting also felt that along with strengthening the intelligence network and use of technology to process information faster, Railways will also encourage passengers to actively cooperate in preventing anti-social activities while traveling and while waiting in the station premises.

The ministry appealed to the passengers to remain alert and aware during the journey. Information about any suspicious activity or suspicious person in the railway premises has been asked to be immediately given on railway helpline number 139.

The meeting also laid emphasis on strengthening technology-based security arrangements, increasing CCTV coverage across the entire railway network and improving operational security coordination between Railway Board Headquarters and field zones.

Apart from this, discussions were also held on strengthening cyber security, upgrading the quality of cameras and deploying AI-based surveillance and monitoring systems.
