New Delhi, January 24 (IANS). According to the government, so far 27.08 lakh youth have been trained under the Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY) 4.0 (till December 7, 2025). This training is given in 38 different sectors and covers 36 states and 732 districts.

According to the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, between April 2024 and December 7, 2025, more than 7.5 lakh youth were trained in sectors like IT and ITES, Aerospace and Aviation, Agriculture, Rubber, Leather, Tourism and Hotel Industry in 34 states and 670 districts.

PMKVY is the flagship short-term training scheme of the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship. According to the ministry, over the four phases of the scheme, it has grown from a small-scale scheme to a large and demand-based skills training system.

To better prepare the youth for employment, 77 special courses and 102 new posts related to future jobs have been started. These include new areas like Artificial Intelligence (AI), Industry 4.0, green jobs and digital services.

The ministry said that more than 15,500 institutions across the country are implementing PMKVY 4.0, of which more than 7,000 skill hubs are running in schools, colleges and ITIs. Apart from this, IITs, IIMs, NITs, IIITs, government institutions and public sector companies are also associated with this scheme for the first time.

Between April 2024 and September 2025, Rs 1,652.89 crore has been spent under this scheme.

A separate budget of Rs 200 crore has been kept under PMKVY 4.0 to create a national pool of trainers and evaluators. The rules, curriculum and certification system for this have been decided by NCVET and are hosted on the Skill India Digital Hub (SIDH).

The ministry said that 34,505 trainers and 13,844 assessors have been certified under the programs related to PMKVY 4.0 from April 2024 to November 2025.

As far as Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) are concerned, they are considered the backbone of long-term vocational education in India. Between 2014 and 2025, the number of ITIs has increased from 9,977 to 14,682. During this period, 4,605 new ITIs were opened.

According to the ministry, the number of students taking admission in ITI has also increased from 9.5 lakh to more than 14 lakh, which shows the growing confidence in vocational education. Whereas the number of National Skill Training Institutes (NSTIs) has increased from 25 to 33 and Institutes of Training of Trainers (ITOTs) have increased from 11 to 120. Along with this, 17,475 seats have been sanctioned in NSTI and ITOT.
