New Delhi, December 11 (IANS). Be it winter season or any other disease, the biggest need of the patient is such food which does not burden the stomach, gets digested quickly and gives strength to the body. What should the patients’ diet be like? Ayurveda gives detailed information about this.
Charak Samhita of Ayurveda clearly says, “Diet is the best medicine” i.e. eating right is the safest and most effective medicine. When the digestive power is weak, giving heavy, cold, fried or spicy food to the patient can worsen the condition. Instead, Ayurveda suggests some light and effective diets, which prove to be a panacea for the patient.
The first and best option is moong dal. Ayurveda considers it as Tridoshashamak (destroyer of all three doshas Vata, Pitta and Kapha), cool and easily digestible. In case of fever, vomiting, diarrhea or weakness, thin moong dal water or light simple khichdi is the safest food and also provides energy to the patient. Similarly, by adding half a spoon of desi ghee in rice and moong khichdi, the body gets repaired faster and the digestion process remains healthy.
Lukewarm water is the first treatment in every situation, it dilutes phlegm, removes stomach gas and fatigue and keeps the metabolism active. In case of dehydration or fever, coconut water is nature’s best electrolyte, which instantly restores lost minerals. If the patient does not feel hungry or has a heavy stomach, give him buttermilk or buttermilk mixed with light salt and roasted cumin seeds, it increases Agni and reduces intestinal inflammation.
At the same time, among fruits, apple, papaya and sapota are the safest for the patient, because they are light and boost immunity. Citrus fruits can cause harm in some problems, hence be careful. In case of cold, cough and body ache, decoction of ginger-clove, basil and in case of sore throat, one spoon honey with lukewarm water is very effective.
Desi ghee increases strength and removes weakness after fever. Clear, thin soups of vegetables or lentils provide both nutrition and hydration.
The basic mantra of Ayurveda is, “Eat light, eat hot, eat easily and eat on time.” By following simple rules related to food, the patient’s recovery happens faster. However, it is important to consult a doctor before eating.
