New Delhi, March 29 (IANS). Minister of State Dr Jitendra Singh said on Sunday that abdominal or middle obesity poses a greater risk to health than overall obesity. Especially in India, where even thin-looking people can have harmful visceral fat.
Speaking at the release of ‘Advances in Obesity and Lipid Management in CVD’, a textbook on cardiology, Jitendra Singh emphasized that fat accumulation around the abdomen can significantly increase the risk of serious health problems, even in people who do not appear overweight.
He explained that central obesity is a separate risk factor and can lead to various metabolic diseases like diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular diseases, fatty liver and lipid imbalance. This problem is especially related to Indians. They have a different body type, where despite looking slim, fat gets accumulated around the stomach.
Dr Jitendra Singh said that while overall obesity levels are increasing in both men and women, abdominal obesity is very high and is a major cause of cardiometabolic risk. He stressed the need for early detection to deal with this hidden health threat.
Referring to the changing lifestyle, he said that poor eating habits, less physical activity and imbalance in daily routine are contributing to the increase in metabolic disorders including type-2 diabetes and early heart problems in young people.
The minister also warned against excessive or unscientific fitness practices, noting that too much physical exertion without proper preparation or rest can also harm health. He stressed the importance of a balanced lifestyle, adequate sleep and scientifically guided preventive care.
