Guwahati, July 10 (IANS). Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday made several major announcements related to digital governance and technology. These include the launch of the country’s first government-owned Earth observation satellite ‘Asamsat’ and the announcement of an investment of Rs 100 crore to boost manufacturing of aerospace equipment.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma spoke to reporters after Finance Minister Jayanta Mallabarua presented the Assam Budget 2026-27 in the Assembly. He said the state government is laying a strong foundation for a technology-based economy through investments in digital infrastructure, artificial intelligence (AI) and advanced manufacturing.
The Chief Minister said that Assam is taking big steps towards digital governance. Under this, an investment of Rs 100 crore will be made for aerospace manufacturing, ‘Asumsat’ project and AI based citizen services, so that the state can be made smart and technology-enabled.
Sarma said that a provision of Rs 100 crore has been made in the budget to develop the aerospace components manufacturing industry in Assam. It aims to attract investment, generate high-skilled employment and develop Assam as an emerging hub of the aerospace sector.
Major announcements also include ‘Asamsat’, which will be India’s first government-owned Earth observation satellite. The satellite will provide real-time data for agriculture, disaster management, flood monitoring, urban planning, forest conservation and infrastructure development, helping in governance and planning.
The Chief Minister said the government will also launch a new AI (Artificial Intelligence) based version of ‘Seva Setu’ to improve citizen services. AI technology will be used in this, so that people can get government services in a faster, transparent and effective manner than before.
There is also a proposal in the budget to expand e-courts and strengthen the digital justice system. Its objective is to make it easier for people to access judicial services with the help of technology and to speed up the process of disposal of cases.
Sharma said the government will integrate e-HRMIS and IFMIS. With this, human resources, financial management and monitoring of government expenditure in government departments will be done in a better and more transparent manner than before.
The Chief Minister said that these digital initiatives are aimed at making governance more effective, transparent and citizen-centric. Besides, this will also create new opportunities and employment in emerging technical sectors.
He said that these proposals are part of the government’s comprehensive plan under which Assam will be made a digitally empowered and innovation-based economy. This will increase investment in advanced industries in the state and people will be able to get better and more effective government services.
