Microsoft has rolled out a new security feature for Windows 11 that will prevent any risky software from getting into the operating system. This is called Windows Baseline Security Mode and it will block any unsigned apps, services, and drivers running in the background. If a user accidentally downloads such software, Windows will automatically block it.
How will the new feature work?
This feature has brought a big change at the system level. Drivers and background services make it easier to gain access to the system, which is why attackers use them. Once installed, they can monitor other apps and work continuously in the background. With the new feature, Windows will monitor code signing. Signed software will not interfere with installation, but it will block software with unsigned code before it can be installed.
User transparency and consent are also being increased
In addition to introducing Baseline Security Mode, Microsoft is also increasing user transparency and consent. When an app accesses sensitive device features or data, users will receive a prompt. Users will receive a notification if the software tries to access the microphone, camera, files, and system-level permissions. This is important because software often comes with multiple installers that require multiple permissions. This new change will make it more difficult for them to access sensitive device settings and data.
