If you are planning to buy a new smartphone, laptop or PC in 2026, then you may have to be prepared for extra burden on your wallet. The reason for this is a component we don’t often think about: RAM. Once considered one of the cheapest components, RAM prices are now skyrocketing, and this will impact almost every digital device.
Why the sudden increase in RAM prices?
Since October 2025, RAM prices have more than doubled. In many cases, companies are being quoted 4 to 5 times higher prices than before. This increase is not due to any one reason, but due to a combination of many reasons. The biggest reason is the rapid expansion of AI technology.
AI and data centers are tipping the balance
Today, huge data centers are being built to power AI. These data centers rely on high-performance servers and specialized memory, which consume large amounts of RAM. As the use of AI increased, the demand for RAM started skyrocketing. However, the problem is that the supply of RAM has not increased accordingly. As a result, a huge gap has formed between demand and supply, and prices are continuously rising.
These are not small expenses
According to a BBC report, tech companies often bear small cost increases themselves to avoid impacting customers. But when the cost increase becomes too high, the burden ultimately falls on the customer. Many computer manufacturers say that in the current situation it will be almost impossible to avoid price increases. According to one PC manufacturer, they were recently quoted up to 500% higher prices for some RAM components. Therefore, companies have the option of either reducing their profits or increasing the prices of their products.
Every device will be affected
RAM is not a special component. It is used in almost every electronic device, including smartphones, laptops, desktops, smart TVs and medical devices. This is why if memory becomes expensive, its impact will be felt on the entire tech market. Some companies already own stock, so for them the price increase may be less noticeable. However, manufacturers with low inventory have already increased prices by 4 to 5 times.
Inflation may continue till 2026
Tech industry experts believe that this increase in RAM prices may continue till 2026, and the situation may remain difficult in 2027 also. High-end memory used for AI has impacted the entire market, making even the RAM used by ordinary users expensive. Large cloud service providers have already estimated their needs for 2026 and 2027. This has given a clear indication to RAM manufacturing companies that the demand will be very high, while the supply is limited.
Why can’t companies bear the cost?
In a typical laptop, RAM was about 15 to 20 percent of the total cost. But due to current prices, this share has increased to 30 to 40 percent. Profit margins in consumer electronics are already limited, so companies cannot afford such large cost increases. Some suppliers have even stopped giving price quotations, which shows that they fully expect further price increases.
How expensive can smartphones and laptops be?
The manufacturing cost of a typical laptop with 16GB of RAM could increase by $40 to $50 in 2026. For smartphones, the cost of the phone may increase by about $30. This increase will be passed directly on to the customer.
