MBBS Students: A petition has been filed in the Supreme Court seeking a direction to the Center and others to accommodate medical students returning from Ukraine in Indian medical colleges as a one-time measure. Alternatively, the Center and the states may be asked to coordinate with the authorities in Ukraine and declare certain seats in central, state or private medical colleges as foreign campuses of Ukrainian institutions to protect the war-torn eastern, the petition said. Studies can continue under a one-time emergency measure until the situation in the European country returns to normal.
The petition, filed by two lawyers, highlighted the plight of Indian students who have been forced to discontinue their studies in various courses, including medical, at various institutions in Ukraine. The petition said that there is no clarity as to when normalcy will be restored in Ukraine and whether the students will be able to complete their courses or not. Notably, the Supreme Court had on March 4 taken note of the Centre’s submission that it has so far rescued 17,000 Indian students stranded in war-torn Ukraine. The court had also asked the Center to consider setting up an “online helpline” for parents and families of students stranded in Ukraine and to tell the high courts not to look into the issue related to evacuation of students so that multiplicity of litigation be avoided.
