A tragic accident has come to light off the coast of Libya where a boat full of migrants capsized. At least 53 people are feared dead or missing in this accident. The International Organization for Migration (IOM) said on Monday that the incident occurred on February 6, 2026. A total of 55 people were on board the boat, most of whom are still unaccounted for.
🗞️: UAE companies opened their treasury, employees are getting bonus up to 6 months, the report revealed.
When and where did the boat capsize?
According to the report, this rubber boat had left from Al-Zawiya in Libya at around 11 pm on February 5. About six hours after the start of the journey, the boat started filling with water and it capsized north of Zuwara city. Only two Nigerian women could be saved in this accident. Libyan officials rescued him during the search operation.
The women who survived told how terrible this journey was. One woman lost her husband in this accident, while two children of another woman died in this accident. Smugglers often fill weak and small boats with more people than their capacity, due to which such accidents keep happening.
This year’s figures and circumstances
IOM has reported that the threat to migrants on the Central Mediterranean route is continuously increasing. Smuggler networks are playing with people’s lives for profit. If we look at the initial figures of this year, the situation looks quite serious:
So far in 2026: 484 migrants are dead or missing on the Central Mediterranean route.
January 2026: 375 people went missing due to bad weather.
2025 figure: Last year, more than 1300 people went missing on this route.
The organization says that Libya is not a safe place for migrants. The conditions in the detention centers there are inhumane. IOM has appealed for stronger international action to rein in smugglers and protect migrants.
