In another incident in Bangladesh, a Hindu youth, Mithun Sarkar, was killed after miscreants chased him and claimed he was a theft suspect. During the chase Sarkar was forced to jump into the water, where he drowned and died.

In an area called Mahadevpur in Bangladesh’s northern district of Naugaon, a Hindu youth named Mithun Sarkar was chased by a mob on charges of theft. He jumped into the water and died as soon as he jumped.

The police were informed and they recovered his body with the help of the fire service. Naugaon Superintendent of Police (SP) Mohammad Tariqul Islam gave this information to ANI over phone on Wednesday.

He further said, “We are conducting the post-mortem of Mithun Sarkar’s body and investigating the incident,” but did not elaborate further.

As the date of the 13th national parliamentary elections in Bangladesh approaches, communal violence is increasing at an alarming rate. At least 51 incidents of violence were recorded in December alone.

Bangladesh Hindu Buddhist Christian Unity Council said in a statement that these included 10 murders, 10 cases of theft and dacoity, 23 incidents of encroachment, looting and arson of houses, business establishments, temples and lands, four cases of arrest and torture on false charges of religious defamation and being “agents of RAW”, one attempted rape and three incidents of physical assault. This trend of violence continued in the first week of January this year also.

On January 2, 96 decimal paddy land of Satyaranjan Das was set on fire in Ramgati, Lakshmipur. On January 3, businessman Khokan Chandra Das was murdered with a sharp weapon in Shariatpur and set on fire, due to which he died.

In the early hours of the same day, the family of Milan Das was taken hostage during a robbery in Ward No. 4 of Amuchiya Union of Boalkhali Upazila, Chattogram.

A similar incident took place on the same day at the house of Sanu Das in Homna, Cumilla, from where 10 loads of gold jewellery, 12 loads of silver and a total of Tk 20,000 in cash were looted, the statement said.
