Attack on Iran’s power plants would be a war crime, American expert cited international rules

Discussion has intensified at the international level regarding possible attacks on Iran’s power plants and energy infrastructure. In a recent report by IRNA news agency, American experts have made it clear that such attacks can be considered war crimes under international law. This statement has come amid threats and tension in which it was said that targeting civilian targets could increase the troubles of the general public.

International humanitarian law and safety of power plants

Under international humanitarian law, civilian infrastructure, such as power plants and water supply plants, are given special protection during war. The main points of these laws are given below:

Attacking targets essential for the basic needs of civilians is completely prohibited. According to Article 147 of the Geneva Conventions, mass destruction of property without military necessity is a serious crime. Nuclear power plants enjoy special protection and it is legally illegal to target them under any circumstances. If the civilian harm caused by an attack outweighs the military benefit, the attack is considered illegal.

Big things from human rights organizations and experts

Organizations like Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch have taken a strong stance in this matter. Amnesty International’s research director Erica Guevara-Rosas has said that threats to attack power plants could prove disastrous for millions of civilians. Philip Bolopian, executive director of Human Rights Watch, also expressed concern over the threats being made by various leaders. Experts believe that such steps harm the world order based on international rules.

Impact on the Gulf region and the general public

The rhetoric between Iran and its neighboring countries regarding energy bases may also affect the people living in the Gulf region (GCC). Attacking these bases will not only lead to war but could also pose a threat to the security and employment of millions of expatriate Indians working there. Targeting energy facilities poses a risk of power crisis and economic instability in the entire region, affecting every common man and private person.
