The complete control of power in Saudi Arabia has now changed. According to reports, 89-year-old King Salman is now only a nominal ruler. Since the year 2024, Mohammed bin Salman (MBS) has gradually strengthened his hold on the administration. Now all the important decisions and foreign policy of the country are completely with MBS. This is being considered a ‘silent power transfer’ in which the center of power has changed without being officially announced.

How did the picture of power change in Saudi?
There have been major changes in the royal structure of Saudi Arabia in recent times. Mohammed bin Salman (MBS) is currently the head of Saudi Arabia. Prime Minister And both are Crown Prince. A royal decree was issued on 27 September 2022, appointing him as Prime Minister. This was a rare occurrence in Saudi law as the king is usually the prime minister.
Apart from this, changes have also been made in the succession law (Article 5), so that power can go to the ‘most capable’ descendant. This change has completely cleared the way for MBS. To further strengthen his hold on the administration, MBS has appointed his brother Prince Khalid bin Salman as Defense Minister. Now matters related to army and security have also come directly within his close circle.
MBS’s big decisions and the current situation of the King
According to recent information, King Salman has stopped participating in major meetings after 2024. In the year 2025, he did not meet any foreign leader face to face. His work is now limited only to issuing messages and formal welcome. On the other hand, MBS himself has signed a defense agreement worth $142 billion with America.
MBS has also signed a big defense deal with Pakistan and is also handling bilateral talks with Türkiye and Germany. On the economic front, he has promised to take Saudi investment in America to $1 trillion. Apart from this, the historic decision to lift the decades-old alcohol ban in Saudi Arabia to promote tourism and increase revenue has also been taken on the initiative of MBS.
