16 elderly people died in a fire in an old age home in Indonesia on Sunday evening. Police gave this information on Monday.
Police said that the fire broke out in this one-storey building located in Manado in North Sulawesi province of Indonesia while the people living there were sleeping.
North Sulawesi police spokesman Alamsyah Hasibuan said, “The team working on the ground has confirmed that the death toll is currently 16. Of these, 15 people were burnt alive, the body of one victim has been found.”
Hasibuan said that 15 people have survived the incident safely, who are undergoing treatment in two hospitals of Manado.
According to officials, the bodies have been taken to the hospital for identification, where the help of family members is being sought.
Officials said it took six fire tenders more than two hours to extinguish the fire after local residents informed emergency services.
Initial police reports attributed the fire to an electrical fault, but officials later said the cause of the fire was still under investigation.
