The holy month of Ramadan is starting from 19 February 2026 in Oman. Along with this, strict rules regarding behavior in public places are going to be implemented in the country. According to Omani law, it is completely prohibited to eat, drink or smoke in public during the day during Ramadan. This rule applies not only to Muslims but also to all residents and tourists living there.

What will be the punishment for breaking the law?
Under Article 277 of the Oman Penal Code, there is a provision of strict punishment for eating or drinking anything in public during the day during Ramadan. This also includes drinking water. A person breaking the rules can be jailed for a minimum of 10 days and a maximum of 3 months. This law applies to every person above 15 years of age, irrespective of religion. It is mandatory for tourists also to follow these rules.
Change in working hours and important things
Office timings have also been changed in the month of Ramadan. Government sector employees will work from 9 am to 2 pm. The working time for Muslim employees in the private sector has been fixed at a maximum of 6 hours a day. Non-Muslim people have been advised to use only closed rooms or designated places for eating and drinking. Smoking inside a car in public will also be considered a violation.
