A new proposal is being discussed in the Parliament of Iran which calls for imposing tolls and taxes on ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz. Why did Iran propose to impose toll tax on ships?
Iranian lawmakers believe that if this sea route is used for transit, energy supply and food security, then the countries concerned will have to pay money in return. Tehran MP Somayeh Rafiei said that Iran ensures the security of this route, so it is entitled to collect the tax. Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf has already announced that maritime traffic will no longer return to the old rules.
Which countries and ships will be affected by the new rules?
Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi clarified that this sea route is currently open, but it is closed only to tankers and ships that belong to enemy countries or those attacking them. Advisors to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei have indicated that a new system will be implemented for the Strait of Hormuz after the war. In this, maritime sanctions can be imposed on those countries which have imposed economic sanctions on Iran.
