Israel has issued a strict warning of air strikes on the main Masnaa border crossing connecting Lebanon and Syria. The Israeli Army issued an order in this regard on Saturday, April 4, 2026 and asked people to vacate the area immediately. Lebanese security teams have begun evacuating the crossing, adding to the difficulties for hundreds of trucks carrying passengers and goods traveling there.
What reason has Israel given for the attack on the border crossing?
Israeli army spokesperson Avichay Adraee informed on social media that Hezbollah is using this border to smuggle military goods and weapons. The army also issued a map with warnings to evacuate the Masna crossing and the M30 highway linking Beirut. Israel says that they will target these areas because they are being used for military activities.
What is the reaction of the Lebanese and Syrian authorities to this?
Lebanese and Syrian officials have completely rejected these claims of Israel. Officials said that this crossing is used only for common citizens and goods traffic. The current situation is as follows:
Lebanese security sources have confirmed that the Masna crossing and the government database center there have been evacuated following the threat. Syrian authorities have currently stopped traffic on this route in view of the safety of passengers. Lebanon’s Minister of Public Works and Transport had earlier clarified that this is a civilian facility which is under the supervision of the government. Hundreds of trucks and their drivers are stuck on this route because they are not getting permission to cross the border.
What does this warning mean at the international level?
Organizations such as Human Rights Watch and the Red Cross have previously said that attacking civilian infrastructure may be against international law. Spain has also criticized such threats and said that civilian facilities should never be made military targets. The closure of this route has become a major problem for those who trade or travel between Lebanon and Syria by road.
