A 5.5 magnitude earthquake occurred in the southeastern area of Afghanistan on Tuesday. Reuters quoted the GFZ as saying, while according to the US Geological Survey (USGS), its center was 34 km north-east from Jalalabad, the capital of Nangarhar province.
This shock came at a time when the horrific earthquake in northern Afghanistan caused huge havoc two days ago. So far at least 1,400 people have died and hundreds of villages have turned into debris in the 6.0 magnitude earthquake that occurred late on Sunday night. Most houses could not tolerate shocks due to raw brick and wood.
Jabhullah Mujahid, the chief spokesperson of the Taliban government, said on Tuesday that only 1,411 people died and 3,124 people were injured in Kunar province. A spokesman said, “The rescue operation is going on in all the affected areas. Where the helicopters could not land, the commando forces were aircraft and the injured were taken out of the debris and sent to safe places.”
Meanwhile, the United Nations human coordinator Indrika Ratvate feared that this disaster “millions of people may be affected.” He said, “We cannot forget the people of Afghanistan, who are struggling with many crises and shaking. The tolerance of communities has now reached the peak.”
According to USGS, Sunday night earthquake occurred about 27 km from Jalalabad and at a depth of just eight kilometers.
