Zohran Mamdani, elected mayor of New York City, declared that his victory had overthrown a “political dynasty”. Quoting the words of India’s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, he said that with his victory New York City had “stepped out of the old into the new era.”
Indian-origin Mamdani has created history by winning the much-discussed election for the post of Mayor of New York City. He won by defeating veteran leader and former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo and Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa.
“Friends, we have uprooted a political dynasty,” Mamdani said in his victory speech Tuesday night. I wish Andrew Cuomo all the best in his personal life, but after tonight I am saying his name for the last time, because now we are turning back the politics that used to serve the few. New York, tonight you have made history.”
“We won because New Yorkers convinced ourselves that the impossible could be made possible,” he said. And we won because we decided that now politics will not be something that will be imposed on us but it will be something that we will do ourselves.
Mamdani said, “Standing before you, I am reminded of the words of Jawaharlal Nehru – Sometimes in history there comes a moment when we step from the old to the new, when an era ends and when the long-suppressed soul of a nation finds expression. Tonight, we have stepped from the old into the new era.”
