Indian-origin Zohran Mamdani created history by winning the election for the post of Mayor of New York City. All eyes were on this election, by winning which Mamdani became the first South Asian person and Muslim person to hold the top post of America’s largest city.
Mamdani (34) was considered ahead of other candidates in the elections for the last several months. On Tuesday, he defeated Republican Party candidate Curtis Sliwa and politically influential leader Andrew Cuomo, former Governor of New York State. Cuomo had contested the election as an independent candidate and received the endorsement of US President Donald Trump just before the voting.
Mamdani surprised everyone by defeating Cuomo in the Democratic primary contest for the post of Mayor of New York City. In June this year, he was declared the winner in the primary elections.
His campaign team said, “Zohran Mamdani is running for mayor to lower the cost of living for working-class New Yorkers.
Mamdani continued to gain support among the youth and the working class, who were struggling with rising inflation and employment uncertainty amid the country’s difficult economic and political situation.
With Mamdani’s victory, a new political and ideological era has begun in New York City and America. Now a person with democratic and socialist ideology is going to take over the reins of a city where capitalism has dominated.
Indian-born Mamdani is the son of renowned filmmaker Mira Nair and Columbia University professor Mahmood Mamdani. He was born and raised in Kampala, the capital of Uganda, and moved with his family to New York City at the age of seven. Mamdani recently obtained US citizenship in the year 2018.
Mamdani attended the ‘Bronx High School of Science’ and received a bachelor’s degree in Africana Studies from Bowdwin College.
During high school he co-founded his school’s first cricket team, which later competed in the first cricket season of the Public School Athletic League. According to Mamdani’s official profile, she worked as a ‘Foreclosure Prevention Housing Counselor’ where she helped save low-income apartheid-affected people in the Queens area from being evicted from their homes.
During this work, Mamdani was inspired to enter politics. In 2020, he was elected to the New York Assembly for the first time and represented the 36th Assembly District, which includes areas like Astoria, Ditmars-Steinway, and Astoria Heights.
Mamdani has promised to lower the cost of living for New Yorkers and make life easier. He has said that as mayor he will immediately freeze rents for all permanent tenants.
