Kabul, November 2 (IANS). India has sent a consignment of more than 16 tonnes of medicines to help Afghanistan. India delivered more than 16 tonnes of medicines to Afghanistan to help combat vector-borne diseases like malaria, dengue and leishmaniasis, a Taliban spokesman announced on Sunday.

Taliban spokesman Sharafat Zaman said the medicines and diagnostic kits would aid Afghanistan’s national malaria and other vector-borne disease prevention program. He said the supplies sent by India will help enhance Afghanistan’s capacity to fight diseases like malaria, dengue and leishmaniasis.

In a post on social media platform

The Taliban spokesperson further said that this assistance is part of India’s continued commitment to support the health sector in Afghanistan and strengthen bilateral cooperation in public health and disease prevention.

“These medicines and diagnostic kits will directly support Afghanistan’s National Malaria and Other Vector-Borne Disease Prevention Program. These supplies are aimed at enhancing the country’s capacity to respond to diseases such as malaria, dengue and leishmaniasis, which remain serious public health challenges in many areas of Afghanistan,” he said.

Zaman said the Ministry of Public Health of Afghanistan expressed its gratitude to the Government of India for its timely and valuable assistance.

He further said, “The Ministry said that these medicines and diagnostic kits are an important step towards improving public health infrastructure and ensuring effective disease control, especially in vulnerable and high-risk communities. This assistance reflects India’s long-term partnership and assistance with Afghanistan. By providing essential medical supplies, India reaffirms its role as a trusted partner in promoting health, stability and humanitarian cooperation in the region.”

Let us tell you, Afghanistan’s Foreign Minister Mawlavi Amir Khan Muttaki visited India for the first time in October. Only after this India has provided medical help to Kabul. During his visit to India, the Afghan Foreign Minister met External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on October 10 and the two discussed Afghanistan’s development, bilateral trade, territorial integrity and independence, people-to-people ties and India’s support for capacity building, among many other issues.

Meanwhile, Foreign Minister Jaishankar said that Muttaki’s visit to India is an important step in taking forward bilateral relations. Along with this, he also announced handing over five ambulances to Afghanistan. On 10 October, External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said that India had delivered additional food items to Afghanistan for earthquake-affected people.
