Pakistan’s capital Islamabad was shaken by a massive explosion on Tuesday. The blast occurred near the entrance of the District Court building, which is crowded with hundreds of lawyers, staff and citizens every day.
Pakistan Home Minister Syed Mohsin Naqvi said that so far 12 people have been confirmed dead, while many others are injured.

Forensic team engaged in investigation, confusion over the cause of the explosion

The police spokesperson said, “It is not yet clear what kind of blast it was. We will be able to say something definitely only after the forensic report comes.”
The blast took place in the afternoon, when a large number of people had reached the court for appearances. After the explosion, there was chaos all around and the rescue team and police forces reached the spot.

Local media report – Explosion near police van, blood soaked people fell on the ground

Local media channels have shared pictures of the incident site, in which people can be seen lying near a police van in a pool of blood. The glasses of nearby shops and vehicles were broken. According to eyewitnesses, “the sound of the blast was so loud that nearby buildings shook.”

Possibility of terrorist attack not ruled out

Although the nature of the blast is not clear in the preliminary investigation, officials have said that the possibility of a terrorist attack cannot be ruled out.
Islamabad Police has sealed the entire court premises and surrounding area and the forensic team is busy collecting evidence.

Security agencies on high alert

Pakistan Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi said, “We are investigating every aspect. Efforts are being made to find out what type of explosive was used in the blast.”
Security has been increased in Islamabad and surrounding areas following the blast, and additional searches and security checks are being conducted at all government offices and court complexes.
