Prisoner Sonu Singh, who is serving death sentence in the case of rape and murder of a five-year-old girl, escaped from GMCH-32 late on Monday night by pushing a policeman. Punjab Police had brought the prisoner from Ludhiana Central Jail for treatment. Teams of Chandigarh and Punjab Police are working to nab the accused.
Sector 34 police station on Wednesday registered a case against Sonu Singh (29), a native of Tesahi Buzurg village in Fatehpur district of Uttar Pradesh, on the complaint of jail warden Malkit Singh.
Death sentence was given in March
In March 2025, a Ludhiana court sentenced Sonu to death and imposed a fine of ₹5.5 lakh. Upon receiving information about the incident, teams from Crime Branch, District Crime Cell, Operation Cell, Sector 34 police station and Punjab Police started investigation.
According to sources, a team of Chandigarh Police has caught the accused and is expected to arrest him soon.
After the girl was raped, the body was hidden in a bed box.
On December 28, 2023, Sonu Singh lured a 5-year-old girl with chocolate and took her out of the house. He took her to his room, raped her, then murdered her and then escaped after hiding the body in a bed box. When the police investigated the girl’s disappearance, Sonu was seen going with the girl in the CCTV footage. When the lock of the room was opened, the body was found in the bed box. On the basis of DNA report and evidence, the court sentenced him to death.
