Sajib Wajed, son of ousted Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, has spoken out against the extradition request sent by the Bangladesh government to India, calling it “illegal” and expressing confidence that New Delhi will not take action on it.

Speaking to ANI, Wajed said, “I think they (Indian government) know very well how to handle this extradition request. I don’t think the Indian government will respond to such an illegal request. I believe in Indian democracy and the rule of law.”

Wajed also warned India about the developments in Bangladesh under the new government.

He said, “India should really be concerned about supporting the Yunus government. This is Jamaat-e-Islam, the largest Islamic party. They have released thousands of terrorists who were convicted and sentenced to jail by our government. They have released them.”

He further alleged that extremist groups were operating more freely than before. “Lashkar-e-Taiba is now operating freely,” he said.

He further said that this group is also linked to violence outside Bangladesh. He further said, “Links with their Bangladesh branch have been found to be behind the recent terrorist attacks in Delhi.”

“Prime Minister Modi is probably very concerned about terrorism from Bangladesh at this time,” he said.

The Bangladesh International Criminal Tribunal on Monday sentenced Sheikh Hasina and her close aide, former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan, to death, while a third accused, former police chief Chaudhry Abdullah al-Mamun, was given a five-year jail term after he turned government witness to allegations of committing “crimes against humanity” during the July-August insurgency in 2024.

Reacting to the verdict pronounced against her, Hasina said there was no democratic mandate in the decision taken by a rigged tribunal set up and headed by an unelected government.

Earlier, the Ministry of External Affairs said that India has taken note of the verdict delivered by the International Criminal Tribunal for Bangladesh in relation to Sheikh Hasina and said that India is committed to the best interests of the people of Bangladesh.

The statement said, “India has taken note of the verdict delivered by the “International Criminal Tribunal for Bangladesh” in relation to former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. As a close neighbour, India is committed to the best interests of the people of Bangladesh, including peace, democracy, inclusivity and stability in that country. We will always constructively engage with all stakeholders in this direction.”
