Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday said India and Jordan need to revive old trade ties to unlock future economic opportunities.
Highlighting the long-standing trade ties between the two countries, Prime Minister Modi said India is currently Jordan’s third largest trading partner and stressed that economic engagement should not be limited to statistics alone.
He said, “India is Jordan’s third largest trading partner. In the business world, numbers matter a lot. We are here not just to count numbers but to build long-term relationships.”
Prime Minister Modi stressed the need to revive the historical ties between the two countries for shared future prosperity.
He further said, “There was a time when trade took place from Gujarat to Europe via Petra. For future prosperity we have to revive our old relations.”
Prime Minister Modi described India-Jordan relations as unique, where historic trust connects with future economic opportunities. He said that there was a detailed discussion on ways to convert geographical location into opportunity and opportunity into sustainable development.
Pointing to India’s economic progress, the Prime Minister said that the country is fast moving towards becoming the third largest economy in the world with a growth rate of more than 8 percent. He said this growth is driven by high productivity, strong governance and innovation-based policies.
He further added, “Today, for every Jordanian investor and business, India offers many opportunities in various sectors.”
Emphasizing on digital cooperation, Prime Minister Modi said that India’s experience in building digital public infrastructure can prove to be extremely valuable for Jordan. He said platforms like UPI, Aadhaar and frameworks like DigiLocker have become global standards of inclusion and efficiency.
The Prime Minister further said, “India’s experience in building digital public infrastructure can prove extremely valuable to Jordan. India has transformed digital technology into a model of inclusion and efficiency. Platforms like UPI, Aadhaar and frameworks like DigiLocker have now become global standards.”
He said there were discussions with the King of Jordan regarding linking these digital infrastructures to Jordanian systems.
“His Excellency and I discussed ways to link these structures with Jordanian systems,” Prime Minister Modi said.
The Prime Minister also highlighted the possibilities of cooperation in the startup ecosystem and suggested that India and Jordan can combine their startups under a common platform that brings together ideas, innovation and capital, which will further strengthen economic ties between the two countries.
