Chandigarh. The campaign against drugs ‘Yudh Nasha Virudh’, which was started on the instructions of Punjab CM Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, has completed 10 months. Punjab Police has registered 29,351 FIRs and arrested 42,622 drug smugglers since March 1, 2025. Police have recovered 1,849 kg of heroin in various operations. Since the beginning of this anti-drug campaign, on the instructions of DGP Gaurav Yadav, operations are being conducted simultaneously in all the 28 police districts of the state daily. Punjab CM Bhagwant Singh Mann had asked Police Commissioners, Deputy Commissioners and Senior Superintendents of Police to make Punjab a drug-free state. The Punjab government has also constituted a 5-member cabinet sub-committee under the chairmanship of Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema to monitor the war against drugs. Apart from the recovery of 1,849 kg of heroin, the police also seized 599 kg of opium, 272 quintals of poppy husk, 51 kg of hashish, 624 kg of ganja, 28 kg of ICE, 46 lakh intoxicating pills/tablets and Rs 15.26 crore in drug money. On the 306th day, Punjab Police arrested 49 drug smugglers and recovered 468 grams of heroin, 202 intoxicating pills and Rs 2,500 in drug money from them.
He said that more than 100 teams comprising of more than 700 police personnel under the supervision of 61 gazetted officers conducted raids at 257 places across the state, due to which 38 FIRs were registered across the state. He also said that the police teams also investigated 271 suspicious persons during the day-long operation. Meanwhile, the Punjab government has implemented a three-pronged strategy – enforcement, de-addiction and prevention – to eliminate drugs from the state. Punjab Police has convinced 21 people to undergo de-addiction and rehabilitation treatment as part of ‘De-addiction’. –
