Islamabad Around 97 people died due to floods in the East Punjab province of Pakistan and it has a negative impact on more than 44 lakhs. The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has given this information.

According to PDMA, the floods due to high water levels in Ravi, Sutlej and Chenab rivers have damaged more than 4,500 villages in the entire province.

The authority said that about 24.5 lakh people have been delivered to safe places under the ongoing rescue and relief operations so far.

News agency Xinhua quoted PDMA as saying that a total of 396 relief camps have been set up in the affected districts, while about 19 lakh animals have also been transported to safe places.

According to official data, at least 956 people died and more than 1,060 were injured due to seasonal rains and floods across the country since 26 June. More than 8,400 houses have been destroyed or damaged across the country, and more than 6,500 animals have been killed.

Relief work is going on as the authorities are working to provide shelter, food and medical help to the displaced communities as well as to prevent further losses.

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) said on Friday that at least 884 people have died since the torrential rains and floods, which started on 26 June this year, 1,182 people have been injured, 9,363 houses have been destroyed, and 6,180 cattle have been killed.

The Pakistan Election Commission (ECP) has postponed the upcoming by -elections in nine constituencies of Punjab amidst flood crisis, badly disrupted and widespread damage to infrastructure.

Officials have further issued a warning of rain, while the rescue teams are cautious and the losses are being assessed in the affected areas.
