Russian External Affairs Minister Sergei Lavarov said on Sunday that President Vladimir Putin is ready to talk to Ukraine President Volodimir Jailonski, but he questioned the validity of Jailonsky.
In a rare interview to NBC News, Lavarov said that before signing any agreement, it should be clear that the person in front is valid. He said- “When the status of signing the documents comes, it would be a clear understanding that the person who signs is valid. According to the Constitution of Ukraine, Jailnsky is not a valid president.”
Lavrov admitted that Jailonski “de-facto” is head of Ukraine regime, but also added that the validity of the person signing the agreement is a very serious issue. He said that the demands of the meeting of Putin to meet Putin are actually an attempt to strengthen his validity.
Russia is constantly arguing that Jailonski’s 5 -year term has ended in May. At the same time, Kiev says that due to the provisions of martial law, the powers of the President increase automatically during the war, so Jailonski is still a valid president.
The statement came at a time when President Putin and US President Donald Trump had an important talks in Alaska recently. After that Russia spoke of improving relations between the two countries and restoring cooperation and also invited Trump to come to Moscow.
US Vice President J.D. Vance said Russia has given Ukraine “important concessions” after Trump’s demands to end the war. He said that the US President has “very aggressive and energetic diplomacy” with both Moscow and Kiev to have any agreement to stop the war.
Lavarov also claimed that there was no interest in capturing any area of Russia. He said- “We have the largest area in the world, we do not need any other region. Our goal is only to eliminate the security threats coming from Ukraine’s land and Russian origin and Russian -speaking people to save Ukraine’s ‘Nazi government’.”
At the same time, Putin said after Alaska talks that he had “good, creative and clear conversation” with Trump. He hoped that this step would begin the restoration of Russia-US relations and further progress would depend on the American leadership.
