Serious negligence has been revealed in the case of death of pregnant woman Chaina Devi, resident of Bada village of Niwai, in Jaipur’s Sawai Man Singh (SMS) Hospital. Investigation has revealed that the woman was given blood transfusion of the wrong group, due to which she lost her life. This matter is about seven months old, but now after the investigation report of the High Level Committee, preparations have started to take action against the careless.
According to the investigation report, the required reverse grouping of the woman’s blood sample was not done. Blood bags were released from the blood bank without complete verification and standard procedure. According to medical protocol, both forward and reverse grouping is mandatory before blood transfusion to any patient, so that there is no possibility of any kind of mistake. But in this case the rules were blatantly ignored.
The investigation by the High Level Committee also revealed that not just one, but a total of five people associated with the doctor, nursing staff and blood bank were responsible for this serious lapse. According to the report, negligence was observed at every level, from taking the patient’s sample to issuing blood bags and blood transfusion. If the correct procedure was adopted in time, the life of the pregnant woman could have been saved.
Chaina Devi needed blood transfusion during treatment before delivery. But after receiving blood of the wrong group, his health started deteriorating and he died within a short time. After this incident, the family members had made serious allegations against the hospital administration and demanded an impartial investigation into the matter. Now the investigation report has proved the allegations of the family members correct.
Based on the report, the health department and hospital administration are now preparing to take strict action against the culprits. According to sources, along with departmental action, legal steps can also be taken against negligent employees. The case of wrong blood transfusion to the patient is considered very serious and in such cases, there is a possibility of FIR being registered.
On this entire matter, legal expert Advocate Hiren Patel said that the death of a patient due to wrong blood transfusion clearly falls under the ambit of criminal negligence. He said that in such cases, a case can be registered against the concerned doctor and staff under criminal action. Apart from this, the victim’s family can also go to the consumer court and demand compensation under medical negligence.
According to Advocate Patel, the aggrieved party also has the right to claim damages by filing a civil suit in the civil court. In such cases, it is important to fix the responsibility of the hospital and the concerned staff, so that such incidents are not repeated in future.
This incident has once again raised serious questions regarding the quality of treatment and safety of patients in government hospitals. Now it has to be seen how strict action the administration takes against the culprits after the investigation report came out after seven months and how long will the victim’s family get justice.
