Historic LNG agreement between ADNOC Gas and HPCL: India will get energy security for 10 years
ADNOC Gas and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) have signed a mega gas agreement for 10 years on 19 January 2026. The agreement is worth $2.5 billion to $3 billion (approximately ₹20,750 crore to ₹24,900 crore). Under this, ADNOC Gas will provide 0.5 million tonnes of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) to HPCL every year. This deal reflects energy security for India and strengthening relations with UAE. With this agreement, India will be able to meet the target of increasing the share of natural gas in its energy to 15% by 2030.
What is this agreement and its main points?
This agreement converts an earlier ‘Heads of Agreement’ between ADNOC Gas and HPCL into a firm contract. Under this, 0.5 million tonnes of LNG will be supplied every year for 10 years. The deal was signed during the visit of UAE President His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan to India, where he met Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Some important points related to this agreement are given in the table below:
Details Deal Date 19 January 2026 Tenure 10 years Estimated Value $2.5 billion to $3 billion (approximately ₹20,750 crore to ₹24,900 crore) Gas Volume 0.5 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) LNG supply expected to commence 2028 Supplier ADNOC Gas plc Buyer Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) Source of Supply Das Island Liquefaction Facility, UAE
Why is this deal important for India?
This agreement further strengthens the strategic partnership between India and UAE. India has now become UAE’s largest customer of LNG. Of ADNOC Gas’s 15.6 MTPA LNG production capacity by 2029, 3.2 MTPA is contracted to Indian energy companies, including HPCL. This deal will help India achieve its goal of meeting 15% of its energy needs from natural gas by 2030. ADNOC Gas has total contracts worth more than $20 billion with Indian companies.
Where will the gas be supplied from?
This LNG will be supplied from ADNOC Gas’s Das Island Liquefaction Facility. The facility has a production capacity of up to 6 MTPA and is one of the oldest LNG plants in the world. Since its inception, more than 3,500 LNG cargoes have been delivered worldwide from Das Island, demonstrating its good performance and reliability.
What did the officials of both the companies say?
Dr. Sultan bin Ahmed Al Jaber, Managing Director and Group CEO of ADNOC and Vikas Kaushal, Chairman and Managing Director of Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) exchanged the documents of this agreement. Fatema Al Nuaimi, CEO of ADNOC Gas, said the agreement reflects the strong and growing energy relationship between the UAE and India.
