Over 30,000 personnel have been deployed under a multi-layered security net across the city for the Republic Day celebrations and Delhi Police is on high alert. About 10,000 policemen are deployed in the New Delhi district alone, which covers the ceremonial parade route and high security areas.
Additional Commissioner of Police (New Delhi) Devesh Kumar Mahala said, “Around 10,000 police personnel have been deployed in the New Delhi area to ensure security for the Republic Day celebrations. Pickets, barricades and all standard operating procedures are in place.”
He said that the deployment plan, point-wise information and contingency measures have been explained to all the personnel and rehearsals have also been done.
He informed that in the New Delhi area, including the parade route and surrounding places, more than 3,000 CCTV cameras have been installed which are equipped with advanced video analytics and facial recognition system (FRS).
He said that the live feed received from these cameras is monitored round the clock through more than 30 control rooms, manned by around 150 personnel. The police deployed at the ground level are equipped with AI-glasses equipped with FRS and video analytics.
Mahala said, “These AI glasses made in India are linked in real time to the police database of criminals, suspects and declared criminals. If someone’s face matches in a crowded area, it can be detected immediately, which will enable quick action.”
Security arrangements include multi-layered barricades, multiple levels of checking and frisking at all designated entry points, and strict access control measures along the parade route and surrounding areas.
Mobile surveillance vehicles equipped with FRS technology have been deployed at strategic locations to enhance surveillance and quick mobility.
Sniper teams have been deployed on thousands of rooftops in New Delhi, northern and central districts.
Deputy commissioners of police have conducted route surveys and anti-sabotage checks, while vigilance has been stepped up in high-traffic areas such as markets, bus terminals, metro stations and railway stations across the city.
As part of the security campaign, the police is also conducting verification drives for tenants and domestic helpers.
“Inter-state coordination meetings are also held with police forces of neighboring states to ensure seamless exchange of information, intelligence coordination and preparedness,” an officer said.
The Additional Commissioner of Police urged citizens to strictly follow safety guidelines and avoid carrying prohibited items.
The seating areas are named after rivers. People should know their seating positions, access routes and designated entryways.
