In the digital age, mobile numbers are not limited to just calls or internet access. Today, banking, UPI, social media, and even government services are linked to mobile numbers. Therefore, if a fake SIM gets activated in your name, it can directly pose a threat to your identity and your money. Often, people are not aware that there are multiple numbers registered on their Aadhar card.
This is the reason why cases of fraud, fake accounts and OTP theft are increasing. The good thing is that now you do not need to go to the telecom office. Through the TAFCOP portal of the Department of Telecommunications, you can check from the comfort of your home how many SIMs are active in your name and can easily block those that are not yours.
How to check the number of SIM registered in your name:
TAFCOP (Telecom Analytics for Fraud Management and Consumer Protection) is the official platform of the government where you can view all the mobile connections linked to your Aadhar card. For this, first open the TAFCOP portal. Enter your 10 digit mobile number, fill the captcha, and click on Send OTP. After entering the OTP received on your phone, you will be logged in.
Now, a complete list will appear on your screen showing how many SIMs have been issued in your name, which are active, and which are inactive. If you see a number listed that doesn’t belong to you or is no longer needed, select “This isn’t my number” or “No longer needed” next to it. After this, pressing the report button will start the re-verification process. There is no charge for this entire process.
Disadvantages of not blocking fake SIM:
The biggest advantage of removing fake SIM is that no illegal work can be done in your name. This significantly reduces the risk of bank fraud, fake calls, social media scams and identity theft. Your mobile data and banking OTP remain more secure. Additionally, you can easily deactivate SIMs that are no longer needed.
It is advisable that you check the SIM linked to your name at least once a month. If you see a suspicious number, report it immediately. Do not give your Aadhaar and mobile number to any unknown person, and never share bank information or OTP with anyone.
