In view of the increasing tension between Iran and America, the Indian government has issued strict instructions for its citizens living there. The Indian Embassy has issued a new advisory on 23 and 24 February 2026, advising all Indians to leave Iran immediately by available means. The Embassy in Tehran has said that the situation can change at any time, so it would be better to leave using whatever commercial flights or road routes are available.
What are the embassy instructions and rules?
The Embassy has clearly said that Indian citizens should keep their passports and important documents ready at all times. If anyone does not have complete documents, they should immediately contact the embassy. Apart from this, instructions have been given to stay away from the places of protests taking place in many cities of Iran like Tehran and Mashhad. It is mandatory for all citizens to register themselves on an online portal, so that help can be provided to them in case of emergency.
What are the preparations for flights and evacuation?
At present, some commercial flights are running out of Iran, but airlines like IndiGo have closed some routes in view of the danger. According to official figures, about 9,000 to 10,000 Indians live there, most of whom are students and pilgrims. The embassy is also working on arranging charter flights. Keeping in view the past experiences like ‘Operation Sindhu’, the government is planning to evacuate people by road or sea if necessary.
