Smart devices based on Artificial Intelligence are making people’s lives easier, but they are also raising new questions regarding privacy. A recent investigation report has claimed that very private and sensitive videos recorded from Meta’s AI smartglasses reached the contract employees of the company. This revelation has raised serious concerns regarding data privacy.

Shocking things came to light in the investigation
An investigation by two of Sweden’s largest media outlets, Svenska Dagbladet and Göteborgs-Posten, revealed that some contract employees working for Meta were watching videos used for data annotation. According to the report, these videos included very personal scenes like banking information, nude people, scenes related to personal relationships, pornography and even bathroom recordings. It was told that many of these videos were not recorded intentionally but by mistake. For example, some users took out their smart glasses and placed them somewhere, but they did not realize that the camera was still on and recording the surrounding scene.

Foreign workers expressed concern
Investigation also revealed that the work of watching and tagging these videos was often done by contract workers present in other countries. The report said that some employees working in countries like Kenya reported that they were shown extremely sensitive and objectionable content during work, which caused them mental distress.

attention of agencies
This revelation has also increased concern among data security regulators. The UK Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) has sought more information from Meta in this matter. Their purpose is to ensure that the company is following data security laws.

Questions raised on social media
After this incident came to light, a lot of anger was seen on social media. Many users raised questions as to how so much personal information and videos are being handled. People also want to know how many human employees Meta is using to improve its AI system and how much sensitive information about users’ daily lives it has access to.

what did meta say
Meta says the company filters any data before sharing it with contract workers to protect personal information. However, a Swedish media investigation questioned this claim, saying that the videos accessed by employees contained many highly private scenes.

What does Meta’s privacy policy say?
Meta claims that user privacy was given utmost importance while developing its AI smartglasses. According to the company, these devices have such features that allow users to have complete control over their data. However, the company’s privacy policy also makes it clear that under certain circumstances, conversations or interactions with AI can be reviewed.

This process is sometimes assisted by automated systems, while in other cases, humans may also observe or review these interactions. The company says that this is usually done to improve the AI system and improve the quality of services. Meta also advises users in its policy to avoid sharing personal or sensitive information that they do not want to be stored or processed in any system. This means that if a person wants to keep information completely private, it is safer not to share it during a conversation with an AI.

How do Meta AI glasses work?
Meta’s AI smart glasses can perform many tasks through voice commands. Users can activate the AI chatbot and start a conversation by simply saying “Hey Meta.” This command also activates the camera, allowing users to take photos or record video from their direct viewpoint. Additionally, these glasses also make it possible to make first-person video calls, which means the person on the other end can see exactly what the wearer is seeing. This device provides a unique experience for content recording and live conversations.
