Film Music: Tum Hi Na Ho! Arijit Singh, who gave the voice to the romance of an entire generation, announced his retirement from playback singing, then how and to what extent will this void be filled?

Katha opened for most people in dark theaters in 2013. The on-screen scenes of Aashiqui 2 were neither flashy nor shockingly dramatic. Then a slow, almost faint, voice emerged from the side and it was like magic. “You are the one” when the voice reached its peak and its intensity reached the soul. Hindi film music acquired a new romantic tone. The voice was of Arijit Singh. After that one moment, that voice continued to give voice to love, separation and yearning for an entire generation for more than a decade.

Arijit Singh wrote on social media on January 27, 2026 that he will no longer take up new work in film playback singing. The announcement also came very slowly as per his personality, neither any drama nor any rounds. It’s just that a chapter has ended. However, he clarified that he is not leaving music, but only playback singing, as it is called in Bollywood. His separation felt like the end of an era for those who found spiritual expression and solace in his songs.

In this journey of Arijit, fame did not come suddenly, nor did he shine like a star. Before making his mark on film soundtracks, he was a student of classical music in Murshidabad, West Bengal. His relationship with music has not been of any ambition, but of a common nature.

He appeared in the show Fame Gurukul in the mid-2000s, so that was a milestone. He was not successful, did not become a TV star. From this he understood that music is his only support and not singing.

So he continued to quietly assist the composers, programming tracks and singing songs that never reached audiences. He worked with some of the biggest names in Hindi film music, quietly learning how songs were composed and honed. He first sang big hit songs, by then he was not a pure singer but had started understanding the nuances of film music.

aashiqui 2 moment

When Aashiqui 2 was released, Bollywood was full of talent. Sonu Nigam was carrying forward the legacy of the 1990s. Shreya Ghoshal and Sunidhi Chauhan were on top. KK had given his warmth to the 2000s. After that, there was no competition in Arijit’s voice, there was pride in his voice. As soon as his voice touched the emotions, it settled in him.

The song ‘Tum Hi Ho’ was not an announcement, it felt like a confession coming from behind. This subtle tune changed the rhythm of mainstream Hindi film music. Suddenly, the pain of heartbreak became touching, not dramatic.

What happened after that is something that very few singers have got in today’s Hindi cinema, ‘Channa Mereya’, ‘Agar Tum Saath Ho’, ‘Raabta’, ‘Phir Le Aaya Dil’, ‘Muskurane’, ‘Ae Dil Hai Mushkil’. Every song started feeling like my own. His sound became his own for the Millennial generation, like an inherited sound for Generation Z.

away from fame

At a time when singers were becoming brands, Arijit surprised by staying away from celebrity culture. He avoided giving interviews, stayed away from award shows, looked uncomfortable on stage. But when singing live, the hesitation disappeared and the voice started blooming. Due to this they became mysterious, the sound was far away and the man disappeared. People recognize his songs, but not his face. This was rare in an industry obsessed with appearance. Sometimes he was called temperamental in the industry. But as artistic directors and composers say, talent does not always fit into the mold. There has been room for such contradictions in Hindi cinema. Kishore Kumar had proved this decades ago.

relation of bengal

Of course, national headlines came from Bollywood, but Arijit did not break his ties with Bengali music. His classical voice flourished more in Bengali songs. Be it modern Bengali tunes or Rabindra Sangeet, his voice brings a different style, less cinematic, more heart touching. In the last decade, songs like “Kichhu Kichhu Kotha”, “Tumi Jaake Bhalobasho”, “Aami Je Ke Tomar”, “Tomake Chahi”, “Aegiye De” and “Bojhena Se Bojhena” have been a hit in Bengali.

He had a smooth commute between Mumbai and Murshidabad. Jiaganj was not spared, it remained an active location. He built a studio there, recorded and lived there. Bollywood gave him expansion. Bengal gave him pause.

feeling of an entire generation

It is difficult for anyone outside this era to understand what Arijit’s cultural realization is. Breakups were understood through ‘Channa Mereya’. ‘Samajhavan’ remained settled in the distance. Quiet despair was shaped by ‘If You Are With Me’. KK’s passing in 2022 was a reminder of how deeply voices settle in the memory. Zubeen Garg’s departure made him realize his mortality. Now with Arijit leaving, it seems as if another door is slowly closing.

Arijit was not limited to Hindi cinema. He sang in many languages, regions and styles. His collaboration with Ed Sheeran on ‘Sapphire’ was a rare cultural fusion. This was not a meeting of East and West, but an emotional meeting of two artists.

decision to withdraw

Consider his announcement of quitting playback singing. He is neither leaving music nor retiring as an artist. They are leaving a world that gave fame and perhaps also limited it. Playback singing demands customization, one voice for multiple characters. With time, Singh’s voice became so recognizable that instead of blending into the films, it started dominating them. This contradiction can limit creative freedom. Stepping back provides an opportunity to heal, to create without any set patterns. Perhaps this is not to move away, but to settle into a new rhythm.

Arijit has left behind such a musical wealth, which will further improve with time. His songs are immortal not because they are associated with a trend, but because they express emotions. For the Millennial generation his voice will always be a reminder of the pain of first heartbreak and late night phone calls. This will remind you of a time when being broke was common.

New voices will come. Always comes. But what Arijit gave is not just sweetness, but the rhythm of sensations. The silence feels deep when he takes leave from the microphone of the film industry. But it is not empty, there is a melodious echo there. Songs that will always play, on long journeys, in quiet nights, in memories. An era may be ending, but not their voice.
