New Delhi, May 15 (IANS). The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has launched a new Artificial Intelligence based system to deal with cyber crimes and frauds like ‘digital arrest’. This system has been named ‘Abhay’, which will help citizens to check the authenticity of the notices issued by CBI. It has been developed as a real-time notice verification helpbot.
According to the CBI, there has been a rapid increase in cyber crimes in recent years, including misuse of technologies like Artificial Intelligence and deepfakes. Due to these technologies, it has become difficult for common people to differentiate between real and fake information.
The agency said that the fraud called ‘Digital Arrest’ is especially dangerous, in which criminals scare people by pretending to be officers of law enforcement agencies. In such cases, fake notices are sent claiming that the person is involved in some crime. After this, the victim is put under mental pressure and kept under ‘digital surveillance’ for a long time, whereas no such process exists in Indian law.
Keeping these challenges in mind, CBI has prepared ‘Abhay’ system, so that citizens can check any notice themselves. This facility has been made available on the official website of CBI. Users will have to visit the website and click on the ‘Abhay’ option, after which they will have to complete an OTP verification process through the mobile number. After this, a scanned copy of the relevant notice will have to be uploaded.
The system will analyze the notice to determine whether it is genuine or suspected to be fake. CBI says that this technology will help in immediately alerting citizens and protecting them from fraud.
The investigating agency has warned people not to immediately trust any unknown call, email or message, especially when it carries the threat of arrest or legal action. CBI has clarified that no legal process like ‘digital arrest’ exists.
Along with this, citizens have been advised to immediately report any suspicious activity to the cyber crime portal or the concerned authorities. CBI has also said that it will continue to take strict action against all those individuals and networks who promote cyber crimes by misusing banking and telecom systems.
